About

BUILT ON TRADITION

For over 25 years, Superior Halal Meat Market has served North Jersey with honest craftsmanship, fresh halal meat, and a commitment to family, faith, and community.

A Father’s Dream

This business began with a father’s dream and an immigrant’s determination to provide for his family and serve his community. Our father, Hasan, recognized that despite a growing Muslim population in North Jersey, there were very few halal butcher shops available. With little experience in running a business but a strong sense of purpose, he set out to change that. In 1998, he opened his doors on the corner of Main and Bloomfield Avenue in Paterson, becoming one of the first halal butcher shops in the area.

Early Years

Built By Hand

From the very beginning, he was involved in every step of the process. He traveled to farms in Pennsylvania to personally select livestock, followed their journey back to New Jersey, ensured they were processed according to halal practices, and oversaw their delivery to the shop, where skilled butchers prepared fresh cuts daily. He did this seven days a week for nearly 30 years, often sacrificing time with his family so he could build something lasting for them and for the community around him. His hard work made it possible to send his children to college (the first generation in his family) and continuously give back to the community he served. His dedication was unmatched and ultimately defined the superior in Superior Halal Meat Market.

The Next Generation

After his passing in 2023, his sons remain committed to carrying forward the same integrity and standards. Today’s market presents new challenges. Cattle prices have risen sharply due to a combination of factors, including prolonged droughts that reduce grazing land, rising feed costs tied to grain and fertilizer prices, increased fuel and transportation expenses, and ongoing supply chain disruptions. As demand continues to grow while supply tightens, many in the industry face pressure to reduce costs.

Staying True

Integrity over everything

Some halal butcher shops respond by cutting corners, including incorporating leftover kosher cuts into halal meat to lower pricing. While this may reduce costs, it can compromise both quality and the integrity of halal standards. We refuse to compromise the integrity by which we are committed to. We maintain a controlled, transparent process from sourcing to preparation, ensuring that our meat remains consistent in quality and true to halal principles our customers rely on.

THE CRAFT CONTINUES

Community Legacy

Running a small, sustainable business is not easy nor cheap. Responsibly sourced meat comes at a higher cost and this maybe economically challenging as the cost of everything else continues to rise. These realities have reshaped the industry. Across the country, big box stores have replaced many neighborhood butcher shops. Thousands of small businesses closed as national chains offered convenience and lower prices. In the process, communities lost more than storefronts. They lost knowledge, craftsmanship, and the personal connection that once defined local artisanal shops. However, we’ve chosen to keep our doors open and remain steadfast in offering honest halal meat without compromising on quality. We do our best to keep our prices fair while staying true to the standards that define us as an artisanal butcher shop. You will not find us in a grocery store or a large market. You will find us standalone in a corner of Main Avenue. Our butchers know our customers by name. We take the time to answer questions, prepare cuts the way you like them, and make sure you leave with exactly what you need, just the way a neighborhood butcher shop should be experienced.

THE CRAFT CONTINUES

TODAY

Three Generations Later

Today, decades later, our father’s promise remains unchanged in his initial offerings. Our knives are still sharp. The scale is still honest. The craft remains. And the families who first walked through our doors in 1998 are still coming, now with their children and grandchildren. We look forward to welcoming you as well!
